Wisdom 17: Dyeing Gray Hair
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) was asked about the statement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
“Change your gray hair and do not imitate the Jews.”
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) replied:
“The Messenger of Allah said this when Islam was still limited in strength and numbers. But now that its influence has spread far and wide and become firmly established, each person is free to choose.”

Summary of the Wisdom
During the early years of Islam, the Muslim community was relatively small and militarily vulnerable.
For this reason, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) encouraged elderly Muslims to dye their gray hair so that the Muslim army would appear younger, stronger, and more numerous before its enemies.
At that time, leaving gray hair undyed was commonly associated with Jewish custom, so the Prophet instructed Muslims not to imitate that practice in this particular context.
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) explains that this instruction was connected to the circumstances of that period.
Once Islam became firmly established and strong, the original reason no longer applied, leaving the matter as a personal choice.
Commentary
1. Context Matters in Religious Rulings
This narration demonstrates that some religious instructions are closely connected to particular circumstances.
Just as certain Qur’anic rulings were revealed for specific situations, some prophetic instructions were also based on the needs and conditions of their time.
According to Islamic scholarship, changes in certain practical rulings occur only by Allah’s permission and in accordance with divine wisdom, when the circumstances that justified the earlier ruling have changed.
2. Dyeing the Hair Today
According to this explanation, dyeing gray hair was strongly encouraged during the early Islamic period because it served an important social and strategic purpose.
Once that purpose no longer existed, dyeing the hair remained a permissible and recommended personal practice rather than a necessary one.
Therefore, choosing not to dye one’s gray hair is not considered blameworthy, nor is it regarded as imitation of another religious community.
3. Leadership Requires Awareness of Time and Circumstances
One important lesson from this wisdom is that wise leadership considers changing circumstances when making decisions.
Public welfare and the needs of society may require different approaches at different times.
Islamic history contains several examples in which leaders acted according to the greater public interest while remaining faithful to religious principles.
Understanding these historical contexts helps explain why different decisions may be appropriate under different conditions.
