Wisdom 18: The Consequences of Following Endless Hopes
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said:
“Whoever allows himself to be carried away by the reins of his hopes will stumble upon his appointed end.”

‘Inān (عِنان)
The reins or bridle used to control a riding animal. Figuratively, it refers to control or guidance.
‘Athara (عثر)
To stumble, slip, or fall.
Summary of the Wisdom
This wisdom warns against long, unrealistic, and excessive worldly hopes that distract a person from life’s true purpose.
While pursuing beneficial goals is encouraged, becoming consumed by endless ambitions may cause a person to neglect Allah, the Hereafter, and the reality of death.
Before such hopes are fulfilled, death may unexpectedly arrive.
Commentary
1. Hope Is a Blessing—When It Is Balanced
Hope and aspiration are not inherently blameworthy. In fact, they are among Allah’s blessings.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) is reported to have said:
“Hope is a mercy from Allah for my community. Without hope, no mother would nurse her child, and no farmer would plant a tree.”
Hope motivates people to:
- Work hard.
- Build families.
- Seek knowledge.
- Improve society.
- Pursue meaningful goals.
However, hope becomes harmful when it turns into unrealistic fantasies or endless worldly ambitions that consume the heart.
Such excessive attachment distracts a person from remembering Allah, preparing for death, and striving for the Hereafter.
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) also said:
“Whoever prolongs his worldly hopes corrupts his deeds.”
People driven by limitless ambitions often replace one desire with another, never reaching satisfaction before death overtakes them.
2. Endless Dreams Have No End
Worldly fantasies continually generate new desires.
A person fulfills one dream only to create another, leaving the mind constantly occupied without true contentment.
This differs greatly from thoughtful planning and purposeful effort toward worthwhile objectives.
Excessive hopes are often built upon:
- Personal desires.
- Empty fantasies.
- Unrealistic expectations.
- Endless material ambitions.
For example, someone may dream about decorating a luxurious house with expensive furniture before even purchasing the land on which the house would be built.
Such thinking illustrates how imagination can become detached from reality.
Key Messages
Our hopes are like spirited horses.
If we firmly hold their reins and direct them wisely, they carry us safely toward beneficial goals.
If, however, we surrender control and allow our desires to lead us, they may throw us off the path and bring about our downfall.
One of the most effective ways to overcome excessive worldly hopes is to remember the certainty of death.
Awareness of life’s temporary nature helps us distinguish between meaningful aspirations and empty illusions.
