Wisdom 29: Do Not Be Deceived by Allah’s Concealment of Your Faults
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said:
“Beware! Beware! By Allah, He has concealed your sins so completely that it is as though He has already forgiven them.”
Summary of the Main Concepts
A believer should always remain vigilant and never become complacent because Allah has concealed his faults and sins.
One should never assume that the absence of immediate punishment means that Allah has forgiven all sins. The Most Merciful may delay punishment out of His mercy, but this should never be taken as proof of forgiveness.
Commentary
The Arabic word “al-hadhar” (الحذر) means caution, vigilance, and protecting oneself from danger.
In the words of Imam Ali (peace be upon him), the danger from which believers must protect themselves is the punishment of the Hereafter and the wrath of Allah caused by persistent disobedience.
Allah is The All-Forgiving (Al-Ghaffar) and The Concealer of Faults (As-Sattar). Out of His mercy, He hides many of His servants’ sins from people, preserving their honor and reputation. This concealment serves two important purposes:
- To prevent the sinner from falling into even more sins.
- To provide an opportunity for sincere repentance and return to Allah.
However, the concealment of sins should never be mistaken for forgiveness.
Sometimes a person who has neglected repentance and failed to make amends for past mistakes imagines that Allah has forgiven him simply because no punishment has yet appeared. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) warns that this misunderstanding is itself a serious spiritual danger.
Another Important Point
Those who leave this world without sincere repentance will find that their sins become exposed on the Day of Judgment.
Allah’s concealment applies only to this worldly life. On the Day of Resurrection, every hidden reality will be revealed.
As Allah says:
“The criminals will be recognized by their marks.”
Key Message
Concealing people’s faults is one of Allah’s divine traditions.
Allah hides many of our sins and does not expose them before others. However, if we misuse His mercy and assume that His continued kindness is proof that our sins have been forgiven, we may unknowingly move step by step toward His punishment.
Therefore, Allah’s concealment should encourage us to repent sincerely—not to become careless or overconfident.
