Wisdom 20: Fear and Shyness in the Wrong Place
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said:
“Fear is accompanied by failure, and misplaced shyness leads to deprivation. Opportunities pass like clouds, so seize the opportunities for doing good.”

Summary of the Wisdom
In this profound saying, Imam Ali (peace be upon him) identifies two major causes of failure and deprivation, as well as one of the greatest keys to success.
The two causes of failure are:
- Fear of accepting responsibility.
- Shyness or embarrassment when it is inappropriate.
On the other hand, success belongs to those who recognize opportunities and make good use of them before they disappear.
The Imam also teaches that fear and misplaced modesty often cause people to miss valuable opportunities that may never return.
Commentary
1. Fear and Misplaced Shyness Can Lead to Failure
The word haybah originally refers to awe and majesty that inspire fear. In this wisdom, it refers to excessive fear or hesitation that prevents a person from fulfilling responsibilities or pursuing rightful opportunities.
Such fear may stop a person from:
- Carrying out important duties.
- Claiming legitimate rights.
- Seeking beneficial opportunities.
- Serving others effectively.
Likewise, misplaced shyness may prevent someone from asking questions, learning, defending truth, or requesting what is rightfully theirs.
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) also said:
“No one should feel ashamed to learn what they do not know.”
He further advised:
“If someone is asked about something they do not know, they should not be ashamed to say, ‘I do not know.'”
These teachings show that humility in learning is a virtue, while false embarrassment becomes an obstacle to knowledge and growth.
2. Fear and Modesty Are Not Always Negative
This wisdom does not condemn every form of fear or modesty.
Certain kinds are noble and beneficial, such as:
- Fear of Allah and the Day of Judgment.
- Reverence that keeps a person away from sin.
- Modesty that prevents immoral behavior.
- Healthy shame that discourages wrongdoing and protects personal dignity.
Such qualities strengthen faith and encourage righteous conduct.
3. Why Are Opportunities Compared to Clouds?
Imam Ali compares opportunities to passing clouds, a comparison full of beautiful meanings.
They Pass Quickly
Just as clouds move across the sky and disappear, opportunities come and go rapidly.
If they are ignored, they may never return.
They Bring Life
Clouds carry rain, which gives life to the earth.
The Qur’an says:
“We made from water every living thing.”
Likewise, opportunities for good deeds bring spiritual growth and a meaningful life.
Not Every Cloud Brings Rain
Just as not every cloud produces rainfall, not every opportunity is suitable for every person or every situation.
Wisdom is required to recognize which opportunities are truly beneficial.

Misplaced fear and unnecessary embarrassment should never prevent us from pursuing knowledge, fulfilling responsibilities, defending truth, or preserving religious values.
Allah says:
“Allah is not ashamed of the truth.”
Likewise, the believers are described as those:
“Who do not fear the blame of any critic.”
Every blessing granted by Allah is itself a temporary opportunity:
- Youth
- Good health
- Peace and security
- Free time
- The chance to seek knowledge
- Life itself
All of these are passing opportunities that should be used wisely before they disappear.
Every virtuous quality produces positive results, while every negative trait eventually leads to undesirable consequences.
