Wisdom 25: What Is Hidden Within the Heart Will Eventually Be Revealed
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said:
“No one conceals anything within himself except that it eventually appears through slips of the tongue and the expressions on the face.”

In this profound saying, Imam Ali (peace be upon him) points to an important psychological principle:
Whatever a person hides within the heart will sooner or later become evident through speech or facial expressions.
In other words, a person’s inner thoughts and emotions naturally influence outward behavior. Without realizing it, hidden feelings often emerge through spontaneous words, body language, or changes in facial expression.
Commentary
1. Outward Actions Reflect the Inner Self
Human behavior is a reflection of one’s intentions, desires, and inner character.
People often hide emotions such as friendship, hostility, happiness, sorrow, love, or resentment for various reasons. Nevertheless, these hidden feelings frequently reveal themselves unintentionally.
Examples include:
- Blushing when feeling embarrassed.
- Turning pale during fear or shock.
- Looking gloomy when experiencing sadness.
- Displaying joy through a bright and cheerful expression.
Because of this natural connection between the heart and the body, careful observation of a person’s words and expressions can often provide insight into what lies within.
2. Spiritual States Leave Visible Signs
According to the Qur’an and the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), both actions and inner qualities leave their mark upon the human being.
Some emotions—such as anger, fear, joy, envy, love, pride, sadness, contentment, compassion, and modesty—can often be recognized through facial expressions.
However, those who possess deeper spiritual insight are able to perceive even subtler qualities reflected in a person’s character.
On the Day of Judgment, when all veils are removed, everyone’s inner reality will become fully visible.
The Holy Quran refers to this truth:
“The criminals will be recognized by their marks.”
And Allah also says:
“On the Day when some faces will become bright and others will become dark.”
Key Message
If we wish to protect our personal secrets, we should discipline both our speech and our emotions.
Speaking thoughtfully, reflecting before we speak, and learning to control our emotional reactions help protect us from revealing what we intend to keep private through careless words or unintended expressions.
