Wisdom 22: Lineage Cannot Replace Good Deeds<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said:<\/p>\n

“Whoever is held back by his deeds will not be carried forward by his lineage.”<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

“Indeed, the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is the most God-conscious among you.”<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Commentary<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

1. What Does “Being Held Back by One’s Deeds” Mean?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

The phrase “being held back by one’s deeds”<\/strong> refers to deficiencies in both the quantity<\/strong> and quality<\/strong> of righteous actions.<\/p>\n

When a person becomes negligent, lazy, or careless in performing good deeds, spiritual progress slows and the path toward perfection becomes more difficult.<\/p>\n

Laziness in worship and righteous conduct leads to regret in this life and even greater remorse in the Hereafter.<\/p>\n

The people of Paradise themselves will experience a form of regret\u2014not because of punishment, but because they will wish they had performed even more good deeds while they had the opportunity.<\/p>\n

1. True Honor Comes Through Knowledge and Righteous Deeds<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

This wisdom teaches that people’s superiority over one another is measured by knowledge, faith, and righteous action<\/strong>, not by wealth, social position, prestige, or noble ancestry.<\/p>\n

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) encourages every believer to take personal responsibility, actively perform good deeds, and serve Allah sincerely.<\/p>\n

Throughout history, many individuals were born into honorable families but failed because of laziness, negligence, and lack of effort.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, countless people from humble backgrounds attained both worldly success and eternal honor through sincerity, diligence, perseverance, and righteous conduct.<\/p>\n

The journey toward the Hereafter is long, while worldly life is temporary.<\/p>\n

Therefore, we should not become attached to temporary titles or social status.<\/p>\n

Instead, we should prepare ourselves with deeds that will benefit us after death.<\/p>\n

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) says in Sermon 28 of Nahj al-Balagha<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

“Take provision from this world that will protect you tomorrow.”<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Likewise, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) gathered his relatives and declared:<\/p>\n

\n

“O Fatimah, daughter of Muhammad, I cannot avail you against Allah in any way. O Abbas, son of Abd al-Muttalib, I cannot avail you against Allah in any way. Indeed, the most honored of you before Allah is the most God-conscious among you.”<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This powerful reminder teaches that even the closest relationship to the Prophet does not replace personal faith, piety, and righteous deeds.<\/p>\n
