Asceticism Does Not Mean Rejecting Lawful Wealth<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"675\" data-end=\"769\">Asceticism does not mean refusing to earn money or own property needed for one&#8217;s lawful needs.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"771\" data-end=\"850\">Rather, true asceticism means <strong data-start=\"801\" data-end=\"849\">not becoming attached to worldly possessions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"852\" data-end=\"1019\">A genuine ascetic is someone to whom worldly opportunities may come, yet whose heart remains unattached to them and who prefers closeness to Allah over worldly luxury.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1021\" data-end=\"1024\" \/>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"vrogw\" data-start=\"1026\" data-end=\"1088\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"1030\" data-end=\"1088\">2. The Greatest Danger of Asceticism Is Showing It Off<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1090\" data-end=\"1201\">Every virtue has something that can corrupt it, and the greatest danger to asceticism is <strong data-start=\"1179\" data-end=\"1200\">boasting about it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1203\" data-end=\"1310\">The more a person displays or speaks proudly of his ascetic life, the less genuine that asceticism becomes.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1312\" data-end=\"1456\">Seeking admiration because of one&#8217;s simplicity is itself another form of attachment to this world, since it seeks people&#8217;s attention and praise.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1458\" data-end=\"1461\" \/>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1gpzbwm\" data-start=\"1463\" data-end=\"1522\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"1467\" data-end=\"1522\">3. Sincerity Is More Important Than Outward Actions<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1524\" data-end=\"1601\">The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1603\" data-end=\"1705\">\n<p data-start=\"1605\" data-end=\"1705\"><strong data-start=\"1605\" data-end=\"1705\">&#8220;Indeed, Allah does not look at your appearance or your deeds; rather, He looks at your hearts.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1707\" data-end=\"1772\">This noble saying teaches that <strong data-start=\"1738\" data-end=\"1771\">intention comes before action<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1774\" data-end=\"1852\">Without sincere intention, even good deeds lose much of their spiritual value.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1854\" data-end=\"2061\">For this reason, Imam Ali (peace be upon him) considers <strong data-start=\"1910\" data-end=\"1931\">hidden asceticism<\/strong>\u2014where there is genuine detachment from worldly life\u2014to be superior to visible asceticism, which may merely be an outward display.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2063\" data-end=\"2140\">As the Prophet&#8217;s saying indicates, this preference has two important reasons:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2142\" data-end=\"2387\">\n<li data-section-id=\"15tbucr\" data-start=\"2142\" data-end=\"2266\">A sincere intention is more valuable than the outward action itself and determines whether an action is accepted by Allah.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1c48n87\" data-start=\"2267\" data-end=\"2387\">Public displays of asceticism may expose a person to <strong data-start=\"2322\" data-end=\"2345\">showing off (riy\u0101&#8217;)<\/strong>, seeking admiration, and spiritual pride.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"2389\" data-end=\"2392\" \/>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1xu1g8a\" data-start=\"2394\" data-end=\"2413\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"2397\" data-end=\"2413\">Key Messages<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul data-start=\"2415\" data-end=\"3025\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1m96xxw\" data-start=\"2415\" data-end=\"2508\">Asceticism means turning one&#8217;s heart away from worldly attachment\u2014not merely living simply.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"805lxk\" data-start=\"2510\" data-end=\"2617\">A person who is even unwilling to display his own asceticism demonstrates the highest level of sincerity.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"li55hf\" data-start=\"2619\" data-end=\"2749\">Anyone wishing to preserve the spiritual rewards of asceticism should protect it from the diseases of <strong data-start=\"2723\" data-end=\"2748\">ostentation and pride<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"m9taqs\" data-start=\"2751\" data-end=\"2883\">At times, a truly ascetic person may outwardly live like everyone else while inwardly remaining detached from worldly attractions.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"19ab3b1\" data-start=\"2885\" data-end=\"3025\">We should never judge people&#8217;s spirituality by appearances, for <strong data-start=\"2951\" data-end=\"3025\">the greatest ascetics are often those whose asceticism remains hidden.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"3027\" data-end=\"3030\" \/>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"3vskn6\" data-start=\"3032\" data-end=\"3049\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"3035\" data-end=\"3049\">Reflection<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1fdikcf\" data-start=\"3051\" data-end=\"3086\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"3055\" data-end=\"3086\">Worship Through Honest Work<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"wnnv68\" data-start=\"3088\" data-end=\"3158\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"3092\" data-end=\"3158\">The Story of Imam al-Baqir (Peace Be Upon Him) and the Ascetic<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3160\" data-end=\"3293\">Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, who was widely known as a devout ascetic and worshipper, once left the city on an extremely hot summer day.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3295\" data-end=\"3394\">He noticed a man working hard while inspecting his farm, drenched in sweat beneath the blazing sun.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3396\" data-end=\"3418\">He thought to himself:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3420\" data-end=\"3544\">\n<p data-start=\"3422\" data-end=\"3544\">&#8220;Who is this man whose concern for worldly affairs has brought him out in such unbearable heat? I will go and advise him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"3546\" data-end=\"3659\">When he approached, he was surprised to discover that the man was <strong data-start=\"3612\" data-end=\"3659\">Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (peace be upon him).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3661\" data-end=\"3707\">After greeting the Imam, he respectfully said:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3709\" data-end=\"3902\">\n<p data-start=\"3711\" data-end=\"3902\">&#8220;May Allah bless you. You are one of the noble elders of Quraysh. Why have you come out in such conditions seeking worldly livelihood? What if death comes to you while you are in this state?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"3904\" data-end=\"3947\">The Imam leaned against a wall and replied:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3949\" data-end=\"4265\">\n<p data-start=\"3951\" data-end=\"4265\"><strong data-start=\"3951\" data-end=\"4265\">&#8220;By Allah, if death were to come to me in this condition, it would find me engaged in one of the acts of obedience to Allah\u2014earning a lawful living so that I do not need to depend on you or on other people. The only time I truly fear death is if it comes while I am committing an act of disobedience to Allah.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"4267\" data-end=\"4337\">Hearing these words, Ibn al-Munkadir immediately realized his mistake.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4339\" data-end=\"4354\">He humbly said:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"4356\" data-end=\"4473\">\n<p data-start=\"4358\" data-end=\"4473\"><strong data-start=\"4358\" data-end=\"4473\">&#8220;May Allah have mercy upon you, O Abu Ja&#8217;far.
