“Miserliness is disgrace, cowardice is deficiency, poverty silences the intelligent from presenting their argument, the poor person is a stranger even in his own hometown, helplessness is an affliction, patience is courage, asceticism is true wealth, and piety is protection.”<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He states that miserliness<\/strong> brings disgrace, cowardice<\/strong> reflects weakness of character, and poverty<\/strong> may prevent even an intelligent person from expressing ideas, defending the truth, or communicating effectively. Poverty can isolate a person socially, making them feel like a stranger even among their own people.<\/p>\n

The Imam further explains that helplessness<\/strong> is a serious affliction, whereas patience<\/strong> is a form of true courage. Likewise, asceticism (zuhd)<\/strong>\u2014living without attachment to worldly possessions\u2014and piety (wara’)<\/strong> represent genuine wealth and serve as spiritual protection against sin and moral corruption.<\/p>\n

      When someone lacks the financial ability to assist others, society may distance itself from them, causing them to feel like a stranger even within their own community.<\/p>\n

      3. The Meaning of Poverty in Islamic Teachings<\/h3>\n

      Material poverty is not praised in Islam.<\/p>\n

      When certain narrations praise “poverty,” they generally refer either to:<\/p>\n

      • Humanity’s absolute dependence upon Allah, as stated in the Qur’an:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        “O mankind, you are those in need of Allah, while Allah is the Self-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy.”<\/strong>

          Helplessness includes every form of physical, financial, intellectual, or psychological inability. Every type of incapacity is considered a harmful affliction.<\/p>\n

          Patience means remaining steadfast in the face of hardships, temptations, trials, and worldly desires while maintaining inner peace and emotional stability.<\/p>\n

          • Enduring the difficulty of fasting during hot summer days.<\/li>\n
          • Remaining patient after the loss of wealth or loved ones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Courage enables endurance against adversity.<\/p>\n

            Since patience itself is steadfast endurance, every truly patient person possesses courage.<\/p>\n

            9. The Meaning of Asceticism (Zuhd)<\/h3>\n

            According to Imam Ali (A.S.), asceticism consists of:<\/p>\n

            • Limiting worldly expectations.<\/li>\n
            • Showing gratitude for Allah’s blessings.<\/li>\n
            • Avoiding prohibited actions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              Elsewhere he explains that asceticism is summarized in the Qur’anic verse:<\/p>\n

              “So that you do not grieve over what has escaped you, nor exult over what He has given you.”<\/strong>

              Therefore, asceticism does not<\/strong> mean abandoning possessions. Rather, it means avoiding attachment to them.<\/p>\n

              Just as a shield protects a warrior from arrows and swords, continuous piety and careful self-discipline protect believers from sins, spiritual harm, and divine punishment.<\/p>\n

              1. True Wealth<\/h3>\n

              Material possessions are not the only form of wealth.<\/p>\n

              Imam Ali (A.S.) teaches that asceticism itself is wealth<\/strong>, and the wealth of a pious person surpasses that of someone who merely owns material possessions. Real wealth is independence from worldly dependence.<\/p>\n

              A healthy society should strive to overcome every form of weakness and disability by developing knowledge, confidence, self-reliance, and productive capabilities rather than depending entirely on the achievements of others.<\/p>\n

              Harsh reactions and aggression do not always demonstrate bravery.<\/p>\n

              Often, true courage is shown through patience and self-control.<\/p>\n

              One of the most effective ways to abandon immoral traits and cultivate virtuous character is to reflect upon the consequences and outcomes of each behavior.<\/p>\n
