If a person receives the initial blessings with gratitude and appreciation, Allah continues to bestow further blessings upon them. Imam Ali (A.S.) does not say that blessings disappear entirely because of a lack of gratitude. Rather, he teaches that insufficient gratitude prevents future blessings from reaching a person.

Commentary

1. Gratitude Is a Cause for the Continuation of Blessings

Divine blessings descend according to Allah’s wisdom through appropriate causes and means. The more these causes exist, the more abundant and lasting the blessings become.

One of the greatest causes for receiving additional blessings is gratitude. Allah’s treasures are limitless, and His generosity never ends. Therefore, whenever a servant shows sincere appreciation for Allah’s favors, greater blessings follow.

As the Holy Qur’an states:

“If you are grateful, I will surely increase you.” (Qur’an 14:7)

2. The Meaning of Ingratitude

Ingratitude is not limited to verbally failing to thank Allah. It also means using His blessings for improper or sinful purposes.

For example, using good health, youth, strength, or wealth in meaningless or harmful activities is a form of ingratitude. Likewise, showing little appreciation—or none at all—for Allah’s favors is also considered ingratitude.

Just as gratitude attracts more blessings, ingratitude delays or prevents additional blessings.

Allah warns:

“But if you are ungrateful, indeed My punishment is severe.” (Qur’an 14:7)

3. Blessings Are Like Birds

In this wisdom, Imam Ali (A.S.) uses the expression “do not drive them away.”

The Arabic word implies frightening away birds so that they fly off. Imam Ali (A.S.) beautifully compares blessings to birds that must be protected within the cage of gratitude and appreciation. If a person neglects gratitude, they themselves frighten away these blessings and lose them.

4. Divine Blessings Are Both Material and Spiritual

Allah’s favors are not limited to material possessions.

Spiritual blessings include:

Honor and dignity

Sound intellect

Wisdom

Beneficial knowledge

Divine guidance

Love for the Ahl al-Bayt (A.S.)

The opportunity to seek knowledge

These blessings are often even more valuable than material wealth.

Practical Lessons

Instead of constantly focusing on what we lack or complaining about life’s shortcomings, we should recognize and appreciate the countless blessings Allah has already granted us.

A grateful attitude attracts more blessings day after day and leads us toward greater spiritual and worldly well-being.

Self-Assessment

Can it be said that people themselves are among the causes for the continuation and increase of Divine blessings?
