Summary of Wisdom 9
In this profound wisdom, Imam Ali (A.S.) emphasizes the importance of maintaining excellent relationships with people. He encourages believers to treat others with kindness, compassion, and sincere concern so that their presence becomes a source of comfort and benefit. Such a person leaves behind heartfelt sorrow when they pass away and is deeply missed whenever they are absent.
Commentary
1. Good Character Wins Hearts
It is impossible to satisfy everyone at all times because acting according to truth and justice may conflict with the personal interests of some people.
Nevertheless, through noble character and respectful conduct, we can positively influence others and even inspire them to regret their own mistakes.
At the same time, seeking people’s approval should never lead us to compromise Allah’s commands or abandon religious principles.
2. Human Nature Appreciates Goodness
People are naturally drawn to virtue and good character.
When they encounter someone who causes no harm, lives with piety, and demonstrates sincerity, honesty, and compassion, they naturally develop affection and respect for that person—even if they have never personally benefited from them.
Practical Lessons
According to the guidance of Imam Ali (A.S.), we should live in such a way that our presence becomes a blessing to others and our absence leaves a genuine sense of loss.
To achieve this, we should:
- Be kind, approachable, and compassionate.
- Share in the joys and sorrows of others.
- Rise above selfish, tribal, political, or personal interests.
- Feel responsible for helping people and fulfilling their legitimate needs.
- Exercise patience and tolerance when faced with the mistakes and shortcomings of others.
A true Muslim should live a life whose presence is valuable and whose absence is sincerely felt by the community.
Reflection
One contemporary example of this noble character was Imam Ruhollah Khomeini (R.A.).
His conduct left a lasting impression not only on Shi’a Muslims but also on Sunnis, Christians, and even many non-Muslims. Whether in Najaf, Paris, or after returning to Iran, his humility, kindness toward neighbors, and sincere concern for others attracted people’s hearts. During his lifetime, people eagerly sought his company, and even some of his opponents were deeply moved by his passing.
Self-Assessment
- Is it ever acceptable to abandon Divine commands in order to gain people’s approval? Why or why not?
- What qualities should we develop if we wish to live in a way that makes people happy to be with us and saddened by our passing?
