Wisdom 26: Enduring Illness with Patience

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said:

“Walk with your illness as long as it allows you to walk.”

Summary of the Wisdom

This wisdom teaches that a person should not become discouraged or surrender to illness as long as they are still able to function.

One should remain patient, continue daily activities as much as reasonably possible, and avoid giving in to feelings of weakness, because excessive self-pity and despair may worsen one’s condition and confine one unnecessarily to bed.

Commentary

1. The Human Body Has Been Created with the Ability to Heal

Human beings are naturally exposed to various illnesses and physical conditions caused by heat, cold, humidity, dryness, and other factors.

At the same time, Allah has blessed the human body with remarkable healing abilities. Through proper care, moderation, healthy living, and wise use of available resources, many illnesses can be overcome and health restored.

This wisdom also reminds us not to become excessively dependent on medicine or physicians for every minor illness.

Improper or unnecessary use of medications may sometimes weaken the body’s natural defenses or cause unwanted side effects.

This does not mean that Islam discourages seeking medical treatment. Rather, it encourages balance—using medical care wisely and avoiding unnecessary medication whenever appropriate.

2. Avoid Exaggerating Illness

Some people react to even minor illnesses with excessive complaints, constant expressions of pain, and a desire to attract sympathy from others.

Instead of bearing their illness with dignity, they seek attention by magnifying their suffering.

If pretending to possess virtues is blameworthy, then pretending to be more ill than one truly is is likewise a harmful attitude that weakens both character and resilience.

3. A Spiritual Perspective on Illness

Some commentators on Nahj al-Balagha explain that Imam Ali (peace be upon him) may also be pointing to a deeper spiritual lesson.

Patiently enduring illness without unnecessary complaint reflects trust in Allah, contentment with His decree, and spiritual maturity.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:

“Among the treasures of righteousness are concealing one’s charity, one’s illness, and one’s personal hardships.”

Keeping personal suffering private—unless there is a legitimate need to seek help—can be a sign of sincerity, patience, and submission to Allah’s wisdom.

Key Messages

1. Learn to Live Patiently with Illness

If we experience illness or pain, we should strive to adapt to it with patience.

Losing our composure and becoming overwhelmed by dissatisfaction does not reduce physical pain; instead, it often adds emotional suffering to our existing hardship.

2. Use Medicine Wisely

Medical treatment should be sought responsibly and appropriately.

Many medicines provide important benefits, yet they may also have side effects if used improperly or unnecessarily.

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) expresses this principle elsewhere in Nahj al-Balagha (Letter 31):

“At times, the remedy itself becomes the disease.”

This statement reminds us to pursue treatment with wisdom, moderation, and sound medical judgment.

Reflection

It is narrated that whenever Imam Khomeini (may Allah have mercy on him) became ill, he rarely showed his discomfort to others.

Whenever possible, he refused assistance in standing or walking and insisted on carrying out his own affairs independently.

His conduct reflected dignity, patience, and a reluctance to burden others unnecessarily.

Self-Assessment

  1. What is the main lesson taught by this wisdom?
  2. How can losing patience and becoming dissatisfied during illness affect a person?
